The Buddha's Final Teaching

The last words the Buddha shared with his disciples were an encouragement to strive with “appamāda.”

While there isn’t a single English word that fully captures its meaning, this Pāli term is often translated as heedfulness, conscientiousness, diligence, vigilance, or careful attention.

It’s a negation of “pamāda” meaning lax or negligence. So, at its heart, appamāda is the opposite of living carelessly or on autopilot. It is the practice of meeting each moment with wakefulness.

If we want to truly experience our lives, the Buddha’s advice is quite practical. Whatever we’re doing, do it with care.

Be fully present in your conversations. Pay attention to the task in front of you. Notice when your mind has wandered.

Living with appamāda means recognizing when you’ve drifted into autopilot and gently returning to what’s here.

Today, notice the moments when you slip into pamāda.

Rather than judging yourself, simply pause and come back.

Return to the conversation you’re having, the work you’re doing, or the person in front of you.

Every moment of remembering is a moment of practicing appamāda.

Finding Freedom in Fun Every day, our 2-year-old only seems to want to do one thing: have fun. Right up until bedtime, she’s trying to squeeze in “just one more” fun activity. As a...

Beginnings and Endings “Everything that has a beginning has an ending. Make your peace with that and all will be well.”- Jack Kornfield When these things come to an end, we often wish we could go back to the way things were. But that's just not the way the world works. Every single thing that has a beginning has an ending. A...

Knowing When to Let Go The Buddha once told his students about a man who came to a wide, dangerous river. There was no bridge, no boat, and no easy way across. The man gathered branches, vines, and other materials and built a raft. He pushed it into the water, climbed aboard, and used it to make his way safely to the other side....
