The Buddha's Lesson on Letting Go

One day, while the Buddha was sitting with a group of monks, a farmer came rushing toward them, looking distressed.

“Has anyone seen my oxen? They’re lost!” he cried out.

The Buddha looked up calmly. “No, sir. I’m sorry, but we haven’t seen any oxen pass by here.”

The farmer let out a frustrated groan before hurrying off to continue his search.

The Buddha watched the farmer disappear into the distance. Seeing how troubled the man had become over his missing oxen, he turned to the monks and offered a simple teaching.

“You are fortunate, monks. You have no oxen to lose.”

The Buddha's point wasn't that we should own nothing or give up everything we care about.

It was a reminder of how easily the things we have can become sources of worry and fear.

The more tightly we cling to our possessions, our status, our plans, or even the way we think our lives should be, the more we feel we have to protect.

We don't need to give everything up to learn from this story. We can simply notice what we're holding onto too tightly.

What are your “oxen”? Is your fear of losing them already stealing your peace?

When Your Practice Falls Apart Growing up in Nepal, I was surrounded by religion. Everywhere you walked in Kathmandu, you’d see a Hindu shrine or Buddhist stupa. Offering water and saying prayers were part of our family’s daily routine. In Nepal, and especially in my family, it was hard not to practice. When I moved to the U.S. at...
